AMLA Executive Board Member Hennie Verbeek-Kusters delivered a presentation on Financial Intelligence and AML in Europe at the 83rd IBSA General Membership Meeting in Brussels on 14 September 2026.
Verbeek-Kusters highlighted the importance of producing financial intelligence that is relevant, accurate and timely, and of ensuring that it leads to tangible outcomes. She stressed that effective financial intelligence depends on cooperation throughout the AML/CFT system, including strong feedback loops between the private sector, Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), law enforcement authorities and supervisors.
She also addressed the importance of exchanging information across borders and developing a shared understanding of emerging criminal methods and typologies. Using cash compensation schemes as an example, she illustrated how timely information-sharing between jurisdictions can support investigations, identify cross-border links and help prevent similar schemes from developing elsewhere.
Looking ahead, Verbeek-Kusters outlined how the new EU AML/CFT framework and AMLA can further strengthen cooperation between FIUs. She highlighted in particular AMLA’s role in supporting joint analyses of cross-border cases and the opportunities offered by new mechanisms for information-sharing between public authorities and the private sector.
